Giving you a Hand with Grants

Completing funding applications can be a relatively easy or very involved task. When you undertake a grant application, you will need to collect and summarise all aspects related to the project.  This can involve having external studies such as options, design, costing, economic impact and feasibility studies completed at your expense.

We have collected a few resources and ideas to assist you with your next grant application.

Find the right opportunity

Do your research and find out the details of the grant well ahead of the due date. Ensure that you are eligible to apply. It is worth getting in touch with the grant provider to find out details and gain an understanding about how your project may fit in with their objectives.

We have recently released the RDA Grants Portal to help make it easier to search for grant opportunities (rdawa.grantguru.com.au). Other websites to support your search are: grants.gov.au,  business.gov.au, wa.gov.au and Department of Communities. Other sources of advertised grants include our Regional Development Australia Mid West Gascoyne office, your local development commission or local shire/city. They may be advertised on social media, newspaper or on their own organisation's website.

At Regional Development Australia Mid West Gascoyne, we developed an information template for you to download and complete. This helps you organise information that you will need before you start writing. Having this information on-hand centrally can save time when you have found the right opportunity to apply for.

Read and understand the application

Grant applications can be lengthy but it is important that you understand all the requirements. Consider what additional information you could provide that may evidence the potential success of your project, need within the community and/or ability to enhance quality of life.  Gather and/or conduct the research to support your application. Get quotes for the work that needs to be completed without inflating it. Consider what work you may be able to have done 'in-kind' to include in your application.

If you need assistance or guidance, the team at Regional Development Australia Mid West Gascoyne can help. Please get in touch.

Prepare the application

Take the time to write your application and include details such as:
  • Objectives - What is the project meant to achieve?
  • Who will benefit from the project?
  • How does the project fit in with the aims of the grant program?
You might have to address selection criteria. This is your chance to show your research to evidence the need that your project fills and the benefits that come out of this. Consider other funding sources to include. There are people who can help you prepare and write grant applications for a fee. We can provide a free Grant Writing Preparation Workshop. If you are interested in learning more, please feel free to contact us.

We have also put together a few resources that give more detail about writing grant applications from communitygrants.gov.au:
